archive color

While strolling through my archives, I realized that I haven't shared some of my flower photos so I thought I'd put them together in one place for you. They are from different places we visit--the ocean walkway and several public gardens--and some from our own garden. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

ponga fronds

I love to see these fronds in any stage. They make such wonderful patterns from their curled up beginnings to designs against the sky. They are the national emblem of New Zealand.

WATW and kite surfing

This is my world this week in the southern hemisphere. What does yours look like? Post a photo and link up below to show the rest of the world!

The link opens around 11AM, New Zealand time.

Although I host the meme along with others around the world, it doesn't go live until the creator of the link opens it.

These are various shots from Pioneer Village in Stratford. I have no information on them.

Forgotten World Highway--part 2

There was lichen everywhere!!

These geese were posing for my Weekly Top Shot!

The rain had waterfalls overflowing.

These are steam boilers that were used to mill wood by Arthur Fazackerley.

The shape of the land here intrigues me.

white-faced herons

These guys --not these two specific ones, but earlier ones--self-introduced the species to New Zealand in the 1940's. They apparently liked it a lot and decided to stay. These guys--yes, these two specifically, no doubt a breeding pair--visit the water trough behind the house regularly. They probably live near the stream that runs behind the pasture.

Not sure what this one is looking at!

Hubby caught this one shaking himself!

Forgotten World Highway - State Highway 43

Last weekend we took highway 3 up the coast and came back by highway 43. Here's a map to prove that it's an actual part of the NZ roadway :)

Highway 43 is called the Forgotten World Highway. Click here if you want to know more. It has some wonderful scenery along the way, even though some of the road is not paved.

Heavy rains cause slips where supporting soil falls away from the road.

Escaped farm animals are a common sight.

Hobbit's Hole built in 1936. The floor of the tunnel was lowered in 1985 to allow trucks through.

wild color

What a surprise it was to be minding our own business, tooling down the road, and then to see all those colors flying across the road! I wish these were better shots, but they are sooo fast and the weather was not helpful.

*edited--thanks Mick* Originally from Australia, these Eastern Rosellas were introduced in the 1900's.  You can read more here.

weekend trip in black and white

The weather did not cooperate this weekend and I think these shots look much better in monochrome.

wild things!

On a rainy Saturday ride along the 'back roads' we found some great wild things!

Wild geese

Wild turkeys

Goats were introduced as a meat source and to control introduced weeds. You can read more here.
